How did At War with Stars Come to Be?
“This collection came out of a really important time in my life. I was finishing my Master’s program in Creative Writing […] I was having this kind of immersive art experience with a lot of amazing peers. At the same time, I had just met the love of my life, who is now my wife, which is amazing. So I really just felt like my life had finally aligned in all of the right places, and felt like I could explore another side of poetry […] Kind of a right place right time kind of thing.”
Which Poem Did you Write First?
“The first one in the collection, Do You Dare?[…] A lot of people think that life happens to us and that we have no control over it, but I am of the thinking that if you dive into life head first and take it as it is, you can manipulate its direction.”
On the Timing of The Book’s Release
“I was talking to publishers, and all of them wanted me to wait until after 2020. […] 2020 is the year of COVID – you’re book is going to get lost in that. At the same time, this book is meant for a moment like this. It’s a book about self-discovery and asking questions of the universe. For the last 10 months, we’ve all been sitting at home asking these questions, so I kinda said ‘screw it, I’m publishing it anyway.”
