At War with Stars, my new poetry collection, is officially one week old! I wanted to take a moment to talk about the inspiration behind this new collection, how it’s different from my past work, and what readers can expect from me now and in the future.
What Inspired At War with Stars?
There are a few distinguishing things that inspired this collection of poetry.
First, as some of you may know, I completed my Master’s program in Creative Writing at the end of 2019. During that program, I was exposed to and was writing in so many new poetic styles. After much reading, my writing style was pushed in completely new ways.
At the same time, I had just met and was falling in love with my human (now wife!). Life, and love, was helping me to observe and describe things in a way that I never had before.
At War with Stars comes out of this moment. One of transition, but the good kind. The type that allows you to start asking questions of the universe as you begin to know yourself in new ways.
How is At War with Stars Different?
I’m not sure I’d call myself an Instagram poet, but that is how many people discover my work. I have embraced that, and know I owe a lot to the platforms that have exposed thousands to my poetry.
At the same time, this collection isn’t “Instagram poetry.” Many of the pieces in this collection are longer, so you’d never find them posted on my social media pages. I think this gives readers a peek into my thought process and my depth as a creative.
Why & How Did You Choose This Title?
On the path of self-discovery, the concept of fate often arises. We’re constantly asking the universe how and why we got here. The purpose of it all. Traditionally, many cultures and societies have turned to the sky when they ask these questions.
As we seek and find ourselves and life’s meaning, I think it can feel like an internal war. A war over being seen and heard. Identity. Our place in this vast universe.
The moment I said, “At War with Stars” out loud, I knew that was going to be the title.
